Engaging books for children
Tonko Stuurman

Tonko Stuurman has led a full and varied life having trekked in many places, sailed over very long distances, walked hundreds of miles and in the meantime managed to get married, bring up two children and train and work as a specialist consultant. Throughout his life Tonko has held a curiosity about the world and thinks constantly about what makes it so fascinating, and so sets out to learn and understand as much as he can. The world becomes even more fascinating as you turn over the stones of technology, and investigate what you find.

Tonko, by using his writings hopes to nurture and grow that childlike curiosity prevalent in young people, and to inject a sense of wonder, imagination and fun into children’s literature.

A strong history of sailing means that Tonko will one day be back sailing across oceans to exotic faraway places, experiencing all the wonders and inevitable frights that the sea will dish up. He wonders why on earth he enjoys pitting his wits against the elements as they do their best to upturn his vessel or drive him onto rocks……perhaps that will become the basis for a novelette.

Glenn Jenner

Glenn has spent many years using his creative talent in the world of graphic design and illustration. He has built a unique and striking portfolio of characters along the way, his work acting as a signature of his style and dynamism. Glenn is at home with the complexities of computer technology in designing websites, in creating animation characters and in branding.

A longstanding interest in diving has taken Glenn to many places under the sea and he has developed a keen interest in underwater creatures. Above all, he has a fascination for sharks which means that his lifelong ambition to cage dive with White Pointers is coming closer to fruition. Maybe there is a fine story to be told afterwards – one which Tonko sincerely hopes has a happy ending – but let’s not pre-empt the telling. Besides, Glenn will be needed for the illustrations and interviews afterwards.

Glenn is married and lives in Reading and for now, he leaves the sharks alone as they patrol their oceans.

Principles behind the books

Much has been written in the press about boys being dimmer than girls, and that girls are brighter. WH considers that this is nonsense. Both genders excel if provided with appropriate stimuli and respond well to ideas and themes that they find interesting. Currently, it appears to Tonko that the whole early education system favours girls over boys. This imbalance needs to be addressed at least in part by injecting a selection of topics and reading that is designed to stimulate both boys and girls and not simply one gender over the other. WH believes that it can meet this perceived requirement – to provide well written stories having interesting and stimulating themes that appeal independently to both girls and boys.

Our Mission

Our objective is to publish well-written works for children that are designed to appeal to their imagination and help build their vocabulary. We strive to awaken and encourage curiosity in children, both in boys and in girls, on subjects as varied as the universe, our planet, the sea, and the natural world. We aim to inject a sense of fun, mischief and knowledge in our works to encourage independence of thought. We hope you enjoy our books and share our enthusiasm in bringing out the best in young people.

How we want to evolve

Wonky Honky is set up to publish children’s books that are focused on stories that are designed to appeal to boys and girls, initially below the age of 12, typically, the 6-12 age range. We may expand the age range to say, 14 or so. Boys and girls tend to be interested in different things. Our stories follow themes that are designed to appeal more to one gender than the other. However, all of the stories can be appreciated by both boys and girls.

Wonky Honky aims to introduce into the market, books of Children's fiction that include and introduce some of the fantastic discoveries of the modern age in a fictional setting around themes such as space, prehistoric times, marine creatures, engineering, natural history, and others.
